When I first started learning about business ownership I was working in our family grocery store after school and on weekends.
This initial exposure to business, coupled with a creative mind and entrepreneurial spirit, led me to dream to work in an ad agency. I was accepted to and attended UBC, earning a Business Degree with a Marketing Major.
After graduation, I joined Ronald Reynold’s agency as an account executive and managed advertising for the Wendy’s Restaurants and Toyota Dealer’s accounts across Western Canada. And after 5 years, I established and ran the Vancouver branch office for Campbell Mithun.
However, in 1992, when the agency’s largest account left due to a corporate restructuring, I found myself out of a job during a recession…
In 1994 I took a risk. On my wife’s intuition, with no previous experience and not much money, we started a specialty bakery from scratch - Solly’s Baglery.
From a small street-side location, Solly’s grew to become a Vancouver institution with a large and loyal customer base. We expanded to 3 retail locations, with a central production facility with nearly 70 employees.
When my wife and I divorced, she bought me out of the business, and I found myself once again starting over.
I decided to leverage my business education and practical experience to help other business owners.
In 2016, I joined Wardell International as a Business Advisor. I am proud of the trust-based relationships I have developed with my Wardell clients, the business challenges we have overcome, and the goals we have achieved together.
I started noticing more and more unhappy exit stories of many former business owners. This, coupled with my own business exit experience motivated me to learn more about the business exit process. I wondered if I could guide owners through a better path of exiting their businesses.
Certified Business Exit Avisor
I became a Certified Business Exit Advisor through BEI and have worked ongoing to educate myself about the common pitfalls and current possibilities of exit planning. Exit planning is more to me than a practice. It is about using my lifetime of experience coaching owners and former owner for the benefit of my owner clients.
Transition and Succession Strategies
I work one-on-one with business owners to develop transition and succession strategies that allow them to exit their companies on their own schedule, with the proceeds they seek and complete control over the process. I take a coaching approach to client engagements, focusing on helping owners of companies with enterprise value of $5M to $20M achieve both their desired post-exit lifestyles and lasting legacies.
